The Graphic Method Bicycle' is a work of Dick Raaijmakers from 1979. On occasion of the publication of 'Dick Raaymakers Monograph' in 2007 the work was reconstructed by Bart Visser, Edwin van der Heide and Paul Beuk. A nude man sitting on a bicycle is pulled forewords extremely slowly by a motorized winch and steel cable at a speed of a fifth of an inch per second on a track some thirty feet long. As he moves, the cyclist is lifted up off the saddle by one of the pedals. This forces him to make a normal dismounting movement. At the same extremely low speed, he must swing his leg over the saddle without touching or leaning on it. The simple manoeuvre is stretched to half an hour and requires incredible concentration and effort from the performer.

The Graphic Method Bicycle is inspired by the work of the French physiologist and film pioneer Etienne-Jules Marey (1830-1903). In 1878 Marey developed a technique which he called "chronophotographic" and described in his work La méthode graphique, to record physical movements in graphic time patterns. For example the fluid, living motion of a cyclist was dissolved into a series of dead, still, but continuous photographic images. In The Graphic Method Bicycle this technique is reversed and stretched out, a motion sequence captured in photography is brought to life.The 2008 performance is executed by two artists and former students of Dick Raaymakers: Bart Visser and Edwin van der Heide, and is produced with the help of Paul Beuk, Steim and V2_.Raaymakers’ oeuvre covers a wide variety of genres and styles, varying from sound animations for films to extremely abstract pulse structures, from “action music” to infinite voice patterns, from electro-acoustic tableaux vivants to extracts of music theater. He is considered as someone who combines disciplines such as visual art, film, literature and theater with the world of music. Raaymakers has created numerous electronic compositions, “instructional pieces” for string ensembles, phono-kinetic objects, “graphic methods” for tractor and bicycle, “operations” for tape, film, theater, percussion ensemble, museum and performance, artworks for offices and conservatory, and many soundscape compositions and music theatre productions, including some for the Holland Festival and for theatre company Hollandia. His theoretical essays are evidence of his profound interest in special inter-media connections. For instance, in his latest publication Cahier M (2000) Raaymakers elaborated upon the connections he saw between the 19th-century French physiologist Etienne-Jules Marey, composer Pierre Boulez, architect Iannis Xenakis and the musical views of Piet Mondrian.One of his most important books is The Method (1985), in which he describes, in an exact but also poetic way, how motion, cause and effect, and their perception are interrelated.

A live audiovisual concert in two parts, realized in collaboration with Arcadi, IRCAM, Ensemble Intercontemporain and Dmitri Kourliandski.

We created a realtime sound-reactive software to visualize the two pieces composed by Dmitri Kourliandski and performed by the Ensemble Intercontemporain.

IRCAM used 24 microphones to get a separated audio signal from each instrument of the ensemble.

Thomas Goepfer created a software which analyzes each signal and extract the sound information; the resulting data are sent to our software and used to animate the elements of the visual composition.

We interact in realtime controlling several parameters of the visuals and directing the camera movements.

We emphasized the strong dynamic and timbric contrast between the two musical compositions by finding different kinetic and material properties for the two visual counterparts.

The monolithic structure of the pieces lends itself to an architectural / sculptural representation, in which the elements are animated and recombined changing the general order but still maintaining the global identity of the work.

The observer is forced / led to change the point of view, explore the object discovering its different aspects and find out that in breaking the perceptual scheme lies the possibility of a new vision.

“Los medios son nuestros, los miedos no”

La connotación de “Hacking” se viene transformando. De ser considerada por muchos como búsquedas y acciones relacionadas con sistemas informáticos, sigue evolucionando para ser, además, una fórmula de movilización y difusión de mensajes a través de plataformas y elementos digitales.

Tan mandadas a recoger como están las protestas sociales a punta de piedra y agresión, ahora es posible hablar del “hacking” que sacude, informa, inquieta y persuade a través de la creación y con el apoyo de las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación. Ejemplo de esto es el hacking a la Feria del Libro de Bogotá [ver video]. Ahora éste es un “pixel hacking” que “decora” la publicidad de una marca de cerveza colombiana. ¿Por qué?… bueno, si la publicidad nos invade, nosotros a través de pixeles y colores queremos atraer la atención de transeuntes desprevenidos que pueden pensar por si solos, reinterpretar mensajes, preguntarse ¿qué es esto?. En lo abstracto hay un gran espacio para despertar la imaginación… esa que los medios publicitarios tradicionales bombardean y atrofian diariamente. Aunque uno que otro segmento de la publicidad le apuesta a nuevas formas de comunicación e interacción, un altísimo porcentaje se ha quedado paralizado en el tiempo, haciendo más de lo mismo, vendiendo, invadiendo, embobando. Los medios somos nosotros, los medios se siguen renovando y los monopolios van perdiendo protagonismo cada vez con más fuerza, ¿por qué?, porque ya no hay dueños de la información. Es dueño de la información todo el que tenga una idea para compartir y transformar. El ”pixel hacking” es buena prueba de ello: tu, industria tradicional publicitaria, revientas con tu súper tradicional mensaje una ciudad. Nosotros, con pixeles, “adornamos” tu idea para darle paso a las cientos de preguntas, percepciones y reinvenciones que cualquier habitante de la ciudad pueda tener.

The Reality Theatre is a Virtual Reality setup for interactive 3D presentations to large groups of people. Popular applications include office design, landscape design and other architectural visualizations.

Interactivity

Unlike a 3D cinema in a theme park, the software driving the Reality Theatre gives the viewers full interactivity. An operator sitting behind the 'console' controls a virtual camera through the 3D world on demand, and can interact with this 3D scene: move objects around, change colours and materials, etc. Recently we added multi touch detection.

Technology

In the Reality Theatre, 3D ('stereoscopic') images are projected onto a super-wide cylindrical screen. An audience of up to 19 viewers can watch 3D images, created in real time by our high-end visualization cluster. The transparent screen is almost 10 metres wide and 2.80 metres high, and surrounds the viewer with a 135 degree field-of-view. Behind the screen are 6 full HD projectors, producing 120 images per second. (that's nearly 1.500.000.000 pixels per second !)

Through the use of shutter glasses, the 3D images have depth and they appear to be 'life size' to the observers.

A theatre performance in the Reality Theatre

Flexible setup

For most purposes, the audience in the Reality Theatre is seated on a 3-row platform with 19 seats. When required, this platform can easily be removed and replaced by something else.

For example, in office design sessions, it has proven useful to have a setup with meeting tables. Such a configuration gives the members of the audience lots of space for printed 2D drawings, notes, laptop computers, coffee, etc.

ConFIGURING the CAVE is a computer based interactive video installation that assumes a set of technical and pictorial procedures to identify various paradigmatic conjunctions of body and space. The work utilises the CAVE technology stereographic virtual reality environment with contiguous projections on three walls and the floor. The user interface is a near life-size wooden puppet that is formed like the prosaic artists' mannequin; this figure can be handled by the viewers to control real time transformations of the computer generated imagery and the sound composition.

ConFIGURING the CAVE is constituted by seven differentiated pictorial domains. Movement of the puppets body and limbs dynamically modulate various parameters in the image and sound generating software, while particular postures of the puppet cause specific visual events to occur. Most significantly it is the action of moving the puppet's hands to cover and then uncover its eyes, which causes the transitions from one pictorial domain to the next.

ConFIGURING the CAVE embodies a meta-language of functional relationships between corporeal and spatial co-ordinates. These relationships are both physical and conceptual, reflecting the traditional attitude in many cultures of conjecturing the body as the locus and measure of all things. At the same time it puts that tradition in a post-modern exigency which exposes the fragile covariance of a representative surrogate body now located in a measureless space of reticular forms.

"My computer program is like a piano. I could continue to use it creatively all my life."

Before studying in Paris, John Whitney Sr. made 8mm movies of a solar eclipse with his home-made telescope. "He was a builder all his life" as quoted by his son, Michael.

John Whitney Sr. also studied at Pomona College in California and then continued in England where he studied music and photography informally. In the 1940's he began studying images in motion with his brother James which eventually brought them to an experimental film festival in Belgium in which they won first prize. Further experimenting with this new medium, Whitney began producing 16mm. films for television in the 1950's. One of the works produced at this time was the title sequence for Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo. Following that Whitney directed several short musical films for CBS television and in 1957 worked with Charles Eames to create a seven-screen presentation for the Fuller Dome in Moscow, in which the screens were the same size as those used at a drive-in theater.

In 1960 Whitney founded Motion Graphics Inc., which worked to produce motion-picture and television sequences and commercials with an analogue computer. The analogue computer that Whitney started off with was created from machinery that was used for an M-5 Antiaircraft Gun Director. Later, some of the M-5 components were replaced with those from an M-7, a more sophisticated machine, to create a gigantic twelve foot high analogue computer which Motion Graphics used to produce its work. Whitney continued to perfect the analogue computer and the effects that it could create for many years.

In 1961, John Whiney Sr. produced a piece called Catalogue in which he put together all of the effects that he had perfected with his analogue computer.

"Just after World War II my brother and I were constantly excited by a future world. We sort of expected it to happen before the 1940's were past."

John whitney Sr's analogue computerwas a twelve-foot-high device capable of producing complex, yet beautiful graphic designs. Unlike the digital computer which requires the processing of mathematical equations as its input, Whitney's analogue computer must have its information ready before it is processed, meaning that template must be created. The "information" or image source was hi-con kodalith film negatives.When manipulated by the cam machine in a precise orbital motion --with an added movement differential the result is animation. His insight was to harness the cam and ball integrators (formerly used as dedicated equation solvers for the gun fuse timing) as a source of differential motion. That is the key he later continued to use with the digital computer programs. See RDTD. Works such as Arabesque or Catalogue, must first have the images drawn, photographed, and pasted together before processing. Images could be a simple pattern or something.

But it would be the 70's that truly defined successful digital synthesis of sounds and visuals in John Whitney's work. He had long abandoned the analog machine in favor of digital, and by 1975 would no longer be coloring his films in post production with the optical printer. The final film to see the use of this process is what is considered by many to be his best. Arabesque, completed in 1975, was funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and IBM sponsorship (1965 - 69) starting at the UCLA Health Sciences Computing Center. It was the climax to a creative period where such films as the Matrix series were completed. For some Arabesque is considered "the seminal computer film" Set to the music of Manoochelher Sadeghi, the film ran 7 minutes. It is an example of the artist perfecting his art. The whirling, exotic flow of the music is in perfect synthesis with the quasi- psychedelic blooming of colored forms. John Whitney had balanced science with aesthetics, and defined the computer as a legitimate medium for art.

Films like Catalog and Arabesque used sequences that were like "words" which were later combined together in the optical printer into compositions. The technique is somewhat similar to the composer (Schoenberg) working with a musical "tone row."

The 80's would see an expansion of Whitney's exploration of digital harmony. By now he was composing his own music, searching for, as he writes, "a special relationship between musical and visual design." (Whitney, 1991). Whitney was defining a new kind of composer: One with the ability to conceive ideas both musically and visually. "Whether quick or slow, action, as well as harmony, determines much of the shape of my own audio-visual work today. Action itself has an impact on emotions. Fluid, orderly action generates or resolves tensions much in the manner that orderly sequences of resonant tonal harmony have an impact on emotion and feeling..." (Whitney, 1991). The late 1980's would see numerous John Whitney works, combinations of original music and visuals. From Spirals in 1988, to Moondrum, a Native-American influenced series of works completed in the span of 1989-1995, Whitney was now using a special composing program developed in association with programmer Jerry Reed called the RDTD, that enabled the artist to create "musical design intertwined with color design tone-for-tone, played against action-for-action" (Whitney, 1996).

Cumpliendo con los objetivos de La Fabri-K de fomentar los intercambios culturales con artistas nacionales e internacionales y de trabajar activamente por crear enlaces comunitarios de desarrollo cultural local, La Fábri-K abre la convocatoria jogabola: Espacio Nuevas Tendencias, Enero – Marzo / 2009.

Dicha convocatoria esta abierta a artistas visuales de cualquier nacionalidad y edad. Durante tres meses –enero a marzo del 2009- el artista seleccionado tendrá a su disposición un espacio físico dentro de las instalaciones de LFK para realizar su proyecto artístico.

Las propuestas deberán ser presentadas por escrito vía correo electrónico a: la_fabri_k17@yahoo.com a más tardar el 30 de Octubre del 2008; y deberán incluir:

Breve descripción del proyecto, racional, curriculum breve del artista y 5 bocetos o fotografías máximo.

El artista será seleccionado por los integrantes de LFK y será notificado máximo 15 días después de cerrado el plazo de recepción de propuestas.

Espacio Nuevas Tendencias cuenta con 15 metros largo pared, área de piso aproximada de 54 metros y altura de 8 metros, iluminación natural y una fuente de luz blanca, así como conexiones eléctricas.

El propósito de este mensaje es informarte que ya hemos comenzado a trabajar en Optica 2008, Festival Internacional de Vídeo Arte de Gijón. El objetivo de Optica, evento organizado por el colectivo cultural Interferencias, es la promoción de la cultura audiovisual. El Festival se celebrará en la ciudad de Gijón (Asturias, España) del 6 al 8 de Noviembre. Para más información consultar nuestra página web: www.opticafestival.com.

Optica 2008 se divide en diferentes secciones: artistas independientes, galerías, sección documental, encuentros con artistas, performances y fiestas.

Nota para galerías.- Optica ofrece la oportunidad de presentar nuevas obras de vídeo-arte de artistas emergentes o consagrados. La participación es a través de esta invitación.

Si estás dentro del mundo del vídeo-arte: artista independiente, galerista, institución, curador/a..., para nosotros sería un placer poder contar con tu participación dentro de nuestro programa. Para ello, nos gustaría invitarte a realizar una propuesta para esta cuarta edición.

El plazo para recibir trabajos finaliza el 1 de Septiembre. Entre todas las obras recibidas, el Jurado del Festival seleccionará cuatro, las cuales serán distinguidas con los premios a las mejores obras de vídeo-arte, Optica 2008.

Bueno hoy fui a la conferencia en portuñol de REJANE CANTONI una brasilera que dirige una Maestria en diseño y creación interactiva en Brasil, comenzo a hablar de las busquedas de la percepcion en el cine y cinemascope y esas maquinas viejas con inhalador y ventilador y casco etc.. (muy por la linea de lo que viene escribiendo Diego) lo que mas me gusto de todo lo que dijo fue que el cuerpo humano esta hecho para un entorno en 3 dimensiones y que por eso ella desarrollaba los proyectos pensando en esa experiencia sensorial.
Tambien dijo ke igual ellos hacían ideas ke habían podido hacerse o pensarse desde Leonardo siglos atras, pero las maquinas no existen y pues le toca a uno inventarselas. Tambien dijo ke su recompensa no es solo ver el montaje de las obras sino ampliar con su obra esa busqueda de la percepcion de las personas (yo lo entendi muy por el lado de lo que busca Alejandra)

El caso fue ke como suele pasar(nos) en el auditorio no funciono el videobeam y luego no hubo red y en fin no pudo mostrar casi nada y termino mandanos a ver su pagina

Idea

Bueno muchachos se me ocurrió una idea para lo del montaje, se que ahora estamos envolatados por lo del viaje pero me gustaría que lo vieran y me digan que les parece.

Sale del público un personaje, vestido con el traje y la indumentaria típica de los magos de circo, empieza a participar con el espectador haciendo trucos de magia trillados que no le salen. Mientras tanto hay una persona que va entrando a escena mirando con curiosidad al mago que está en el público. El mago sigue intentando sus trucos pero sigue fracasando, el hombre del escenario lo llama y le dice que hay otras formas de hacer magia. En ese momento el hombre saca una linterna de su bolsillo y empieza a apuntarla a lo lejos y a dibujar cosas que aparecerían proyectadas en la pantalla, la primera escena finalizaría cuando el escriba con luz la pablara magia, o el titulo de la obra. (La idea es que aquí utilicemos el taller de Laura para la primera escena)

La idea es que cada uno piense su escena ya sea con su taller o con las ideas que ya habíamos hablado pero a partir de este personaje que le enseña magia con el video al otro “mago”.

Ya después de las escenas me gustaría plantearles un final con la idea de Camilo de los músicos en techo. Podríamos Terminar la obra proyectando desde el techo, acompañado por música para que solo sea una movilización del público, tal vez podría ser sorpresa si le hacemos pensar al publico que el final fue en el pablo sexto y cuando el público ya este afuera apareciera en el techo el mago manipulando el video desde arriba acompañado de música en vivo
Bueno hay les dejo mi idea grosso modo, cuéntenme que les parece.
